2019 Summer Youth Profiles
Summer Youth Employment Programs across the state provide young New Yorkers ages 14 - 24 with paid employment in the summer months. Students selected for programs in their local areas receive work assignments at a variety of public, private and nonprofit entities. This year NYATEP received youth profiles and program states from over 30 local areas. Thank you to everyone who submitted! We are happy to share pictures of selected youth with short descriptions of the youths work experiences - in their own words!

A criminal justice lawyer because I feel like some parts of the system aren't right and they need to be fixed. What was your favorite part of your work experience? Getting a chance to work and experience a new aspect of life and responsibilities. What was something you learned during your work experience? I learned how to manage time and money. And I learned the need for good work ethic. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? SYEP Job Placement: Ithaca City School District Painting and Building Maintenance Was this your first job? Yes What would you like to be when you ‘grow up’? I want to do something that involves travelling. What was your favorite part of your work experience? Just gaining some work experience. What was something you learned during your work experience? I built the habit or getting up in the morning and getting to work on time. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? I want to be a lawyer, because researching how our laws work and how they were created would be really interesting, and that's what I'd be constantly applying to my job. What was your favorite part of your work experience? I really like going to Jada Hill farm, the goats were really cute, and it was really interesting to learn about beekeeping which seems more and more like a viable hobby. What was something you learned during your work experience? I learned how to be a much more effective leader than I feel I was last summer. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? SYEP Job Placement: Wayne County Nursing Home Was this your first job? Yes What would you like to be when you ‘grow up’? I plan to major in Environmental Science in college. What was your favorite part of your work experience? The relationships that I developed with the nursing home residents and staff. What was something you learned during your work experience? I learned customer service such as how to interact professionally with people. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? No improvements come to mind. What was your favorite part of your work experience? My favorite part was working with the kids and getting new experiences and learning their personalities. SYEP Job Placement: Clerical Aide for Niagara's WorkSourceOne One-Stop Career Center Was this your first job? Yes What would you like to be when you ‘grow up’? Nurse and eventually a Medical Examiner. The medical field is a very big, important field that I've had insight to through school, and is a very big interest to me. Forensics is something that has always caught my eye through television and I am determined to get my MD, and I won't give up. What was your favorite part of your work experience? Learning my way around an office, and getting insight into part of what my career will be like. Every day has something new to learn, it was very interesting. there was never a dull moment here. What was something you learned during your work experience? I learned time management. You cannot be a procrastinator because projects or other work have due dates, and things need to move on schedule. You cannot rush things because they will not be as efficient. You have to have patience when working with people who need your help. You always have to keep a planner, stay on top of everything. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? More work sites/career based jobs. [Mahogani will receive the Youth Trailblazer Award from Niagara Organizing Alliance for Hope. In high school, she is a class officer, active in debate club, chorus, and band, has been in National Honor Society for 3 years, is a member of the Youth City Council, German Exchange, and Underground Railroad Museum.] What form of social media do you use most? SYEP Job Placement: Plattsburgh Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Was this your first job? Yes What would you like to be when you ‘grow up’? I want to either be a Border Patrol Agent or go into Military Service. Ichoose these careers because for one I love the outdoors and for two, I love my free country. What was your favorite part of your work experience? My favorite part of the Sweet Program was that I kept busy and the staff there were great. What was something you learned during your work experience? I learned how to run wire in the ceiling, as well as do other maintenance related work. It is hard but it is a good skill to have. A nurse because I like to work with and help others. I have learned throughout the summer that the healthcare field is definitely somethings I would like to be apart of. What was your favorite part of your work experience? I liked being able to work in a nursing setting so I can start to get an idea of what I want to do. I also liked being able to work with the other people in laundry. What was something you learned during your work experience? I learned how to handle myself in difficult situations at work. A nurse anesthetist because I want to be able to help people. I know that they helped my mom in the past when she has needed to go to the hospital and I have watched them help her. I want to be able to do that too. What was your favorite part of your work experience? I liked being in a nursing setting and I liked learning new skills. It showed that I can push myself to do more. What was something you learned during your work experience? I learned how to communicate better. I was really shy when I started but now I find it a lot easier to talk to my supervisors, my coworkers, and the residents. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? SYEP Job Placement: Horse boarding stable Was this your first job? Yes What would you like to be when you ‘grow up’? I want to be a rancher or agriculture farmer. What was your favorite part of your work experience? Being able to work at the stable with the horses, helping with vet appointments, the farrier, and haying were my favorite parts. What was something you learned during your work experience? How to work a hay crop, drive a farm tractor, and how to draw blood for tests done on horses. SYEP Job Placement: Creekside Floral Was this your first job? Yes What would you like to be when you ‘grow up’? I'm going to take classes for my H.S.E. in order to explore a career in the nursing field. What was your favorite part of your work experience? The floral shop was an amazing place to work and I'm glad that did. I learned several things about flowers and employment in general that will help me in the future. What was something you learned during your work experience? One major thing that I learned this summer was how to become more responsible. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? Aryona worked at the Fulton Public Library as a children’s room assistant. Her favorite part about the job was interacting with the kids who came to the library. This summer she assisted with the weekly special programs, helped lead crafts, read to children and aided throughout the library when needed. Aryona had perfect attendance and was a consistent, reliable worker. She brought a positive attitude to work every day. One thing she learned this summer was how to properly sort and shelve books. Aryona is going into 11th grade at G. Ray Bodley high school. She likes art and will be playing tennis in the fall for her school. She aims to do the New Vision Allied Health program as an introduction to the healthcare field. Her goal is to become a doctor and to work as a pediatrician. Aryona truly enjoyed her summer job at the Fulton Public Library and hopes to return next year.

I want to become a criminal investigator because I love challenges and solving them using different techniques and ideas What was your favorite part of your work experience? My favorite part was my coworkers. They were very kind and caring and made it a very enjoyable workplace. What was something you learned during your work experience? Different ways to work with many people, and learning to work in an office. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? More kids being able to be hired. SYEP Job Placement: YMCA Draw Was this your first job? No What would you like to be when you ‘grow up’? I am going to Maryland Institute College of Art in general Fine Arts and want to be an artist. I want to do graphic comic-related work, like sequential art. What was your favorite part of your work experience? I liked everything about the program. I really liked having the opportunity to meet local artists. Also, installing work in a gallery. It was like I was actually doing the job. What was something you learned during your work experience? I learned, especially when it came to workshops and classes that things just don't happen. You don't realize what goes into it. You have to prep the materials and bring them. The artists are there, the assistants are there. There is a bunch of behind the scenes stuff that I would never have thought about. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? I have no suggestions

SYEP Job Placement: Marlboro Summer Camp Was this your first job? No What would you like to be when you ‘grow up’? I am aiming toward teaching because of being in SYEP. I like working with kids and teaching them. It is my favorite environment. What was your favorite part of your work experience? Without doubt, my favorite part of the summer was making connection with the kids. Loved seeing them smile. What was something you learned during your work experience? I learned how to deal with different personalities because everyone is different. I also learned that patience is very important when working with the kids. SYEP Job Placement: North Country Childcare Coordinating Council Was this your first job? Yes What would you like to be when you ‘grow up’? I want to be a doctor of some kind because I want to be able to save people's lives, and if I can't be a doctor then definitely I want to do something else in the Medical Field. What was your favorite part of your work experience? My favorite part of the Sweet Program was getting more experience working with children of all ages. What was something you learned during your work experience? One thing that I learned in the Sweet Program was that if a child is throwing a tantrum, then try not to give them too much attention because they will continue to scream and cry until they get what they want. Only reward positive behavior. What was one thing that could’ve made the program better? In my opinion the Sweet Program was well organized and prepared for all the workers. Andrew is 18 years old and enjoys the fall because he goes hunting with his Grandpa Beck. Andrew also enjoys working on small woodworking projects in his free time. Andrew’s job this summer through the Oswego County Summer Youth Employment Program was building maintenance at the H. Lee White Maritime Museum. Andrew painted the canal barge Derrick Boat 8 which is on the National Register of Historic Places and also worked on the National Historic Landmark WWII Tugboat LT-5. On the Tugboat LT-5, Andrew washed the portholes, washed the windows, polished stainless steel, and helped move the gangplank. Andrew’s favorite part about the job was being able to paint and work on the boats. This Fall Andrew will be attending Cayuga Community College to work towards a degree in Environmental Studies. After his two years at Cayuga Community College, Andrew plans on transferring to SUNY Oswego to receive his bachelor’s degree. Andrew’s main goal after completing college is to become an environmental conservation officer. Andrew was an extremely reliable worker. He always showed up to work on time and would call ahead if he had any appointments. When he arrived at work he started his routine tasks without being asked. He has goals for his future and has created a plan to achieve them.
